What furnace cleaning actually involves here
Power comes off at the disconnect first. The blower assembly slides out. Each wheel fin gets brushed and vacuumed individually, not just blown at. Caked dust on one side throws the wheel out of balance. Heat strips, limits and the sequencer get inspected while the cabinet is open. The evaporator coil is cleaned from the return side, where the loading actually is. Pan and trap are flushed. Then the filter rack and door gasket get checked for bypass.
Most Tampa homes do not have a gas furnace. They have an air handler with electric resistance heat strips, in a hall closet or up in a vented attic. That scorched smell on the first cool night is house dust burning off those strips.
Cleaning the blower solves nothing if the duct keeps reloading it. Undersized or bypassed 1-inch filters let attic air past the media. Disconnected boots dump conditioned air into the attic and pull insulation fiber back toward the return. Sagging flex runs starve the far bedrooms.
Interval here runs tighter than the national rule of thumb. Three to five years for most homes. Sooner with pets, smokers, remodel dust, or a roof leak.
If the duct board plenum interior is mold-grown and crumbling, cleaning it is the wrong call. That transition needs replacing.
